More More More Content
You can never put out enough content. The right piece of content in the right context at the right time is a goldmine.
How is content king? It’s the thing that drives traffic, enforces your brand, and provides value. It can even be the thing that generates your revenue.
Without content our businesses/brands are voiceless. They have no exposure, no substance, and no direction.
There are several forms of content, but online there are 4: Text, Voice, Images and Video.
The most powerful is video. Video can be transcribed into text, trimmed up and distributed as audio, and can even generate any necessary imagery.
Audio can be transcribed into text. It’s not nearly as versatile as Video.
Text is as versatile as video, but in the opposite direction. It inherently doesn’t generate all formats of content while it’s being made, but it provides the framework for which any content can be made.
A video can be made to summarize a long piece of written content (i.e. a book). A piece of audio can be made to debate topics described and provide summarization of the text (or read literally, like an audiobook). Text can provide the framework for imagery as well, as many infographics start out as a complex article that’s boiled down to a simplified image.
My dominant preference of content generation is text. Not because of it’s ease of creation, but because it’s quite literally what I’m most comfortable with. Put me in front of a camera and I don’t really know what to do. Put a mic on me and I’ll stumble on my words.
Sit me down at a keyboard, however, and the words will flow and I can express my thoughts to the full-extent.
But, that’s not the only reason I like the written word.
Google really likes written content. It’s one of the most important ways for Google’s SEO algorithms to understand what’s actually talked about on a particular page.
Lots of written content is one of the best ways to organically drive traffic to any website. That’s why so many do it.
The downfall of text lies in it’s consumption.
People don’t like to read. It takes time and focus. And in this day and age, focus is something that’s hard to come by.
Audio is the most easily consumed medium, because it requires little focus, and you can spend your time doing other things while you’re consuming it.
Video is much like text, but it inherently attracts your focus and keeps you engaged, so you’re more likely to consume it all and actually obtain value from the content.
So that means that text alone isn’t the most ideal way to produce content for a website/brand. You’ll likely attract lot’s of traffic from lurkers and searchers, but you’ll lose them in the weeds of 10k+ word articles that they skim through at best.
What’s My Plan?
The plan is to start with a written text structure. A habit/schedule that allows me to pump out 3k words a day. This will allow me to generate plenty of content for my current venture Closet Tools, and for this website (my personal brand).
Why 3k words a day? If you were to write 2740 words a day, that would allow you to generate a million words per year. That’s an arbitrary number, and it doesn’t exactly explain the number of articles that will be written, but it’s a number that matches the level of ambition that I want to put into the projects that I’m working on.
So, if you read or know about my last post, you’d know that my first guide will be on learning how to type faster (and double my productivity).
By doubling my current typing speed (40 WPM), I can achieve the goal of putting out 3k words in just over a half-hour of uninterrupted typing.
The uninterrupted typing part is crucial as well - because it’s something that I will also need to work on if I am going to be generating content at this scale.
You can’t edit while you write and expect to be able to generate this much content every day. Writing and editing need to be separate tasks. The writing needs to flow naturally out of your mind and into your fingertips. That’s the only way to keep that pace up for a full half-hour or an hour (or more).
Editing, on the other hand, can happen after the fact (which is why I like written content). That takes a different set of skills and brain-power. To do both writing and editing at the same time will slow you down and make you inefficient.
This also means that any research or outlines for the content need to be established before writing starts. If I am stopping to think about what I am supposed to be writing, I will get off track and write wasteful and off-topic content. But if the structure is properly laid out, I can flow quickly between sections and topics and stay on task.
A Million Words A Year Sounds Crazy
Yes, but it’s easily achievable. 3k words a day is not that much, especially when the content is more of a “documentation” than original creative work.
For instance, creating a list of the 100 best ways to sell more items on Poshmark (this would be a topic for a Closet Tools post), is mostly a collection of things that other people have written and re-worded and positioned in a different article.
I’m not reinventing the wheel, simply painting it and putting it on my car so it can work for me.
The New Goal
80+ WPM and then 3k words a day in an hour of work.
So first, I need to get my typing speed amped up and accurate. Then, I need to get into a habit of creating awesome content daily.
